Our Past

Formerly known as Brethren Housing Corporation, Prosperity House was established in 1987 as a nonprofit organization whose mission was to provide housing assistance and related support services to homeless residents of Prince William County, the City of Manassas and Manassas Park. The housing provided was transitional housing, a category of housing that limited occupancy to a period of no more than two years based on the premise that, given support services occupants would be able to secure permanent housing in the private sector within the two years.

Our Present

After years of operating as a transitional housing program, the Board of Prosperity House determined that the goal of achieving permanent housing within the mandated two-year timeline was not realistic. Many of our residents lacked the income to pay Fair Market Rents (FMR’s) in our area without becoming cost-burdened (paying well in excess of 30% of their income for rent). Furthermore, the Board determined that it could more effectively meet the needs of its clients by referring clients to agencies or organizations tasked to address their needs rather than relying on our volunteer staff to provide the necessary support services of each of our clients.
